The Qing government suffered a series of defeats most notably, the Taiping Rebellion, which killed ~30 million people. Chan Wah Shun disliked taking wealthy students, finding them lazy and ill suited for the rigors of training Wing Chun. The teacher was the famous Wing Chun master Chan Wah Shun, who was the disciple of the legendary Leung Jan (佛山贊先生), who is regarded as a folk hero. As a twelve year old boy, Ip Man started watching a kung fu class that had moved into the Ip Family Hall in downtown Fatsan. Ip Man was born in 1893 in Futsan, a city in the Guangdong province of China. Prior to that, Ip Man was best known as Bruce Lee's Wing Chun Sifu in Hong Kong, before Bruce made his fateful journey to San Francisco in 1959. Speaking of which the English Boxer, Twister, played by Hong Kong veteran stuntman Darren Shahlavi is so hilariously over the top he makes Ivan Drago look like a well adjusted human being.Ip Man is now world famous for his portrayal by Donnie Yen in the eponymous film series. The jingoistic elements of the first film are still here, but I didn't mind it so much, possibly due to the fact it was us Brits replacing the Japanese as the 'Big Bad'. The final fight, billed as East Vs West provoked flashbacks to Rocky IV, not least when he gave 'THE SPEECH', you know, the one where Rocky says that we're not so different and we can all just get along in fact there are quite a few parallels to Rocky IV, not to spoil it but it was annoyingly noticeable to me. The first film touched on the points of foreign rule, Chinese emasculation and Ip Man's struggles in a far more realistic and grounded manner. The plot this time round also feels unsatisfactory, it rehashes elements of the first. Here the martial arts choreography is still stunning at times though the introduction of wire work is more obvious and a bit jarring, mostly to accommodate moving Sammo around (he's really fat), as such it doesn't feel as smooth as in the first film. Well, I enjoyed the first film quite a bit, the choreography of the martial arts was stunning and it told an interesting story anchored by a really good central performance by Yen. Add the backdrop of the western control of the area and a eastern/western boxing match set up, Ip Man has a lot on his plate. Natural he needs to beat them up to set up his school. It's slow going since he's not one of the 'gang' of masters that control teaching, headed up by an almost spherical Sammo Hung. Follows on from the last film he relocates to Hong Kong and sets up his own Kung Fu school. Donnie Yen reprises his role as the Wing Chun master Ip Man.
